From: Lt Gen RV Brims CB, CBE, DSO Feb 2010.
To all fellow Light Infanteers, Riflemen, and Regimental Friends, past and present.
As you know on the 1st Feb 2007 The Light Infantry brought their traditions, legacy, ethos, and spirit to a new rifle regiment, The Rifles bringing to close almost 40 years of service. At the dawn of the new regiment the time is right to enshrine the unique character and values of the Light Infantry in a volume devoted to it.
Accordingly I am writing to tell you of the forthcoming publication of Second To None: A Portrait of The Light Infantry 1968 – 2007, a collaboration between the Light Infantry and Third Millennium Publishing, a company experienced at producing service related books. Written and edited by experts with inside knowledge of the regiment, and richly illustrated in colour and black and white throughout, Second to None will be not only a worthy celebration of our contribution to our country in locations all over the world and in a wide variety of operations, but a vivid and entertaining portrait of life and service across all aspects of the regiment.
However to create a book of this range and quality we need your help. By purchasing this book in advance you will not only make a personal substantial saving on the published price, but you will also help to underwrite the considerable costs involved in a publication of this kind. In doing so you will be able to have your name (or your nominee) listed in the book as an enduring record of your links with the regiment. As part of this process we are also seeking sponsorship, and to date have secured promises of £20,000. This is enabling us to use the book as a fund raising opportunity to benefit two causes – The Regimental Memorial at the National Arboretum and the Rifles Regimental Trust.
Just as importantly you can help by sending in your own accounts, anecdotes images, and memorabilia to be considered for inclusion in the book – making Second to None a true family portrait of the regiment. All contributions whether published or not will be held at the Regimental Archive in Bodmin.
Please read the accompanying brochure carefully in order to find out how to order the book and to contribute. This is a unique opportunity to celebrate your regiment and your place in it, whether as a regular soldier territorial or cadet. This will be a regimental volume to treasure and I wholeheartedly recommend it to you.
