A Regimental History In Music
The first regiments of the Light Infantry were formed in 1759. The title Light Infantry being award as an honour in recognition of outstanding merit and achievement. The first Rifle battalion of the 60th Rifles was raised in 1797 and the Experimental Corps of Riflemen who became the Rifle Brigade shortly after. The two things in common to the Light Infantry and the Rifle Regiments were the fast marching pace of up to a 140 to the minute or ‘doubling’ at 160 paces to the minute, and the use of the bugle to communicate orders on the battlefield. Both these traditions are still are still in ceremonial use today. The modern Rifles formed on the 1st February 2007 and are made up of the The Light Infantry, The Devonshire & Dorset Light Infantry, The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire, and Wiltshire Light Infantry, and the Royal Green Jackets.
